Today was a laundry and clean out the car day. Then onto the ferry at 3:30 pm. 17 hour ferry ride. The ferry terminal was 2 kms from the hotel. Left North Sydney in the pouring rain. It did get nicer later in the early evening.
Beach at the hotel. Best chicken wings and double bake potato I have ever had. Yes, under the fog.
Forteau where I am staying for 2 nights.

The first part of the day went through Gros Morne National Park. What I saw of it was quite awesome.
.
At the ferry terminal. Boats were coming in with their catch, unloading and getting weighed.
Today……a truck load of crab !!!
Signal Hill
There’s a place to say you are from LOL
Took my car in for servicing part way down the coast where I found a Mazda dealership.
Worst weather day of the trip. Roads so full of water I was hydroplaning at times !!!
I would have liked to see more of this area down to the bottom of the west coast of NL.
It did clear up somewhat later in the day.
St John’s – more of the colourful houses.
Small icebergs float around the area.
Travelled back to the top of the Burin peninsula starting the trek to the west shore of NL.
Not very exciting. Kind of boring as it is a repeat but the only way back to the Trans Canada Highway. I have reached the halfway point of my 57 day trip !!
Nice sunrise to wake up to.
Landscape on today’s drive and yes that is snow!
Norris – NL’s moose
I took a boat tour of the area in the morning.
St John’s – spot where Terry Fox dipped his foot into the Atlantic Ocean.
Went straight to the Fortress of Louisbourg. Unfortunately not all entertainment was up and running yet. We did get to watch a marching band practice in their uniforms.
While waiting for the ferry I travelled up the Quebec coastline which only goes 50 kms.
DAY 37 JUNE 29
Port aux Basques NL to North Sydney NS
With side trip
144 kms
DAY 35 JUNE 27
Labrador to Deer Lake NL
440 kms
DAY 28 JUNE 20
Around the foot of the Burin peninsula
266 kms
The ferry lands in Quebec then 5 minute drive and you are in Labrador.
This museum was really only about local stuff and only had 3 planes.
Red Bay National Historic site. So many artifacts including clothing. Sailors came from Spain and France in the mid 16th century to hunt whales, produce the oil and barrel it to take back home. They did this for about 70 years.
DAY 25 JUNE 17
In North Sydney then ferry to Argentia NL
5 kms
Largest iceberg in the area.
St Pierre-Miquelon on the horizon
Beautiful day driving down the coast
View from the BnB
Bye bye Newfoundland
Tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada. You can climb the 132 steps up but they were closed June 24-26 for some reason.
The original sites are indentations in the ground marked by what they were.
Deer Lake has a beautiful beach. Reddish fine sand.
DAY 33 JUNE 25
Newfoundland over to Labrador
153 kms
Foggy and raining 13 degrees
Reconstructed buildings based on what they found in the area.
Difficult to get pics inside.
More beaches. There’s an island there where puffins live but too foggy to see anything.
Heading up to L’Anse Amour lighthouse. Hit a fog bank.
Most of the day was driving up the west coast right along the ocean most of the time. It was cove after cove. Countless number of them. Each is a small village.
Cave 75’ x 75’ by 275’ into the rock
Legend has it some go in and never come out.
Hello Nova Scotia.
Puppy at the hotel in Deer Lake. He was sleeping on the job, so I took his picture off the internet.
This is how the day started. Small fishing villages along the way.
Remains of Fort Royal and attachments overlooking Placentia NL near the ferry terminal.
One guy came closer.
The ferry was quite small and rocked hard at times. Two hours to cross. Freaky. Heavy fog. The captain was blowing his horn constantly.
This part of Labrador has some nice beaches. Very fine sand. I was told by a local that I came at the right time. It will be fly season soon and they are so thick that they can almost pick up up!!! Not unlike parts of northern BC.
DAY 30 JUNE 22
Clarenville NL to Deer Lake NL
476 kms
Foggy early in the morning then sunny 22 degrees
We encountered 3 humpback whales. Boats stay back 100 yards. If the whales come to the boat, that is ok. These guys were more hungry than interested in us. With the boat rocking and people in the way, it was hard to get good pics.
DAY 26 JUNE 18
From the Ocean into St John’s NL
184 kms
I decided not to go to Mary’s Harbour. It was another 90 kms each way, all inland.
Heading to Grand Bank.
DAY 31 JUNE 23
Deer Lake NL to St Anthony NL
449 kms
Sunny all day 15 degrees on the ocean 19 degrees inland
I lucked out on the weather yesterday. Today I woke up to pouring rain and heavy fog.
All kinds of weather – rain, then sun, then rain again and then sun again. 17 degrees high.
6:30 am ferry so had to be there before 4:30…
Closest we came to seeing anything out in the water.
Smugglers Cove
It was a long uphill walk to the lighthouse so I opted not to go.
St John’s
Made it to St. Anthony
When I came back from the store, this was on the lawn at the hotel.
Fog, rain, sun then rain again. 17 degrees high.
Flowers Cove is one of the few places in the world you can go and see them.
Cape Spear. It is also the most easternly in North America. Farthest I will be from Vernon. Now the trek back home, with side trips of course.
Today I travelled to the west coast. I did not allow enough time to go up any of the side roads that head up to the ocean to the north. Each area is a different road and there are hundreds of them. The Trans Canada is the only road that runs directly across east to west. Tomorrow will be exciting going up the west coastline.
DAY 29 JUNE 21
Grand Bank NL to Clarenville NL
232 kms
Mostly sunny 21 degrees
